INSPIRATION STRIKES

A creative knows that the moment inspiration strikes, they have to lean into it and see where it takes them. It may end up being nothing or it could end up being the start of something extraordinary. I had my moment at a soccer game recently. My oldest daughter tried out for and made the travel team last year. Her involvement in sports has been great from a developmental perspective. She is learning how to compete and what it means to be aggressive without taking things too far. My moment of inspiration hit me during one of her games. As I watched her play, I started thinking about how I would describe her game and her style of play as a writer. What began as a mental exercise blossomed into an idea for a story about her. For context, she has started the transition from picture books into chapter books. One of her favorite series is the Dork Diaries. while this transition is great for her, it presents an interesting challenge for me because part of my reason for becoming an author was to cater some of the stories to her (and the other kids). But if she is beyond my storytelling capabilities already, where does that leave me? So I wondered if I as capable of writing a novel. As the game continued more ideas continued to come. By the end of the game I felt like I had the bones for a novel. I had never felt such a creative spark in my life. With that said, you all can look out for Victoria’s Big Shot sometime next year!
